If you use USB midi before the sound on this is premium quality no glitches yet upgraded from fast track 4 Much better circuitry. Good product if you can find it for a good price. The direct instrument input option on the Ultra 8R is a bonus for that since you don’t need a DI box for the initial raw recording. On the down side, the lack of any real front-panel metering is annoying. It would have been 5 stars if I didn’t have to upgrade to use this thing.

Once you had all the tracks simultaneously recording, it kept locking up because it could not handle the bandwidth. My one and only complaint is that I did not get this unit earlier. To the right, phantom power buttons activate 48V for channels trac separately, which is useful if you’re recording with a mixture of condenser and dynamic microphones.

At the back, in addition to the eight inputs, a 4 x 2 matrix of line level connections provides the eight outputs, while there is also a breakout cable which gives you connection to both the 8R’s MIDI capabilities and its digital audio ports.
The preamps sound good and don’t over-color the sound or anything like that.
The Fast Track Ultra is a great device to function as the Hub of your recording system. I am impressed with this product, but it requires a computer with some serious horsepower in order to use all 8 tracks to the computer.
M-Audio has a well-deserved reputation for building quality interfaces and the Fast Track 8R isn’t going to do it any harm. If you have a ttrack compressor you like to record through, here’s your chance to patch in. The insert channels work well, I just wish there were more of them.
Fast Track Ultra 8R Drivers

The Insert jacks are awesome for throwing in an traco compressor or eq. I recommend the Ultra for small studio use – it’s a great device.
