The new driver Rich attached couldn’t see the drive. Just my 2 cents worth. Tech support walked me through the process. My DVD showed up in Safe mode but had trouble in a regular boot up. The regedit that Rich lists worked for me. In the end I think I need an Apple! My computer would detect the drive but wasnt able to use it.

Thank you Damien, Worked perfect I live in Spain so I had to tranlate it! The only way it works in my case is gsa4-084n not downloading any windows updates specially the windows player ones.

First I thought the DVDs were wrong and I used to throw them away and now I realized some don’t damage and work perfectly. The firmware doesn’t work it is a conflict between windows and the driver or DVD.
Normally it solved the problem for me for some time, others I have to format and reinstall. Actually, to resolve this issue, I wound up calling HP tech support, instead of downloading the driver.
Thing is, I don’t remember which.
So i came across this blog and tried your regedit advice. The svdram workaround worked like a charm I only had the ‘Lower’ enry. Before doing anything else, you can try this simple process: Then close the Hardware Manager, and immediately reboot your system.
Anyone have any more suggestions??
what is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4084N ATA Device?
Hi Monica, are you using Nero? Tech support walked me through the process. It happens almost everytime an update downloads from Microsoft to my computer and almost everytime I install a new program on it.
Just my 2 cents worth. I have the same problem, I have tried everything, formatting, reinstalling deleting the upperfilters and lower filters, I can record CD ok but DVDS sometimes and then suddenly it stops recording and my DVD drive disappears, I restart and it reinstalls.
Fernando, I contacted hp helpdesk support center and all they have done is tell me to take it back to hp service, they have already changed my DVD drive to a different model and my laptop is a dv and it is just ht-d-tst years old, I had the same problem with the previous DVD and the new one they have installed too. Then, immediately upon reboot of the system, the computer recognizes new hardware is installed, and automatically adds the missing driver.
My DVD showed up in Safe mode but had trouble in a regular boot up.
The new driver Rich attached couldn’t see the drive. I have found out it has to do with windows updates. You have nothing to loose in doing this. If you have Nero uninstall it before doing all of this and reinstall it. Sorry but you have to save and reboot again. Let HP Tech Support answer this one for you! My computer would detect the drive but wasnt able to use it. If not, you will be getting an alarm that the driver cannot be found.

The regedit that Rich lists worked dveram me. It kept telling me that there was an issue with the drive. I tried to uninstall the device, but the problem persisted.
I had to call tech support like Monika
