November is for writing

First, Happy Samhain!

According to the pagan calendar, Halloween is really New Year’s Eve.   What to start your new year with a crazy bang, pagan or not? Try committing to one (or both!) of these Herculean tasks starting tomorrow.

NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month is back! 50,000 words… 30 days… totally doable?! Think of it as button mashing for authors :D! Listen to this week’s WrimoRadio Podcast on Inspiration to hear Fred Miller, a librarian and regional coordinator in Topeka, talk about her experiences with this death-defying feat. I’m definitely down: I’ve got a storyline that combines genetic experimentation, animals, self-modification, human culture examination, and a whole lot of identity crisis… I call it scifi that might be funny, we’ll see. My personal goal is 25,000 this year (my current record is 12,000), so anything extra is gravy. My username is Andrea Mercado, so if you feel like buddying up on the site, feel free to add me.

NaBloPoMo: Looking for something lower on the commitment scale? Put on some training wheels and give National Blog Posting Month a whirl.  Doesn’t roll off the tongue as nicely, but the premise is smooth and easy: post everyday.  That’s it!  For serious, what could be simpler?  Just join the Ning group (it’ll give you an excuse to play with Ning and figure out what all the fuss is about, if you haven’t already), and get writing starting tomorrow.  Give your lolling blog a push, and start off the new year, write!

Sound crazy to do both? Um, yeah.  Will I try?  Yeah, probably.  You’ll see which one falls to the wayside.

Who’s crazy with me?  Who’s even half-crazy with me?

I can probably commit to NaBloPoMo, as I post almost daily anyway. The real challenge for me would be to occasionally write about something other than how terrible I am at my job. :)

You aren’t bad at your job. You’re awesome at your job, it’s the job itself that’s bad.

There’s something: make a commitment to write about 1 positive thing everyday. If you need to call me everyday, do it, I’m here for you. :)

Alternately, the folks over at Soul Food Cafe have some really neat and interesting ideas, with a theme of making writing a daily practice. I might even start posting links here for writing tips/ideas as part of my NaBloPoMo experience.

Stumbled across your blog as a part of NaBloPoMo, so I guess I can say I’m “half-crazy” with you. If I wasn’t a student I MIGHT have been willing to attempt NaNoWriMo, but these 3 term papers due this month is enough. I’m interested in seeing how you do!

I, too, am with you half way. I can definitely commit to NaBloPoMo, but there’s no way I’m writing a book. Since I write mostly about betas and the newest, shiniest thing out there, by the time a book is finished, it would be obsolete! And that, Andrea, is my justification for inaction of the day.

I’m totally cool with carrying the burden of Madness for all of us. ;D

I must admit, my goal this year is only 1/2 of the “real” NaNo goal, so it’s a personal best I’m shooting for. And if only the site would finally update all the widgets and features, I could post my whopping 1,681 words thus far (as the Word word count flies, anyway).

I was successful with NaBloPoMo last year, and I have decided to do it again. It’s on my personal blog, though, because I could not possible write something library-related every day….
