NPR series on the USA PATRIOT ACT
Listening to NPR just now, my SO called me into the room and pointed out a segment (the audio link points to the wrong bit for the moment, but it was, after all, *just* broadcast) on The Morning Edition about the USA PATRTIOT Act, how bits are due to be renewed, and the story of how the Deming Library in the Whatcom County Library System in Washington state fought a government subpoena that *wasn’t* a PATRIOT ACT order, and how it would have been different if it had been.
According to the broadcast, Larry Abramson, the reporter on the story, will be doing a series of these little reports on different parts of the PATRIOT ACT (presumably those being renewed) over the coming weeks. Good thing to keep an ear open for.
This segment was followed by a story (the audio link on this page points to the USA PATRIOT piece mentioned above) on how library records were used in the Unabomber case, and an interesting discussion on how library records are sometimes sacred, and sometimes not.
